Flesh Love is an amazing and disturbing series created by Photographer HAL. He says “The two lovers draw closer until they finally transform into a single being”. But seriously, when looking at these vacuum-sealed “packs of love”, it makes me wonder about true love between varied and fresh couples and a whole different, intriguing and confined world (specially when there in no air to breath). Plastic wrap, couples, love and challenge are key themes throughout Hal’s work with some other elements including individuality, style, communication and intimacy.

Gilbert Garcin was originally the owner of a lamp manufacturing company in Marseille, France. Following a workshop during the Rencontres Internationales in Arles, under the direction of Pascal Dolemieux, Garcin, at the age of 65, gave up his business and began his photographic career. His work has been exhibited and collected around the globe, which satisfies his goal of sharing his ideas on life and his perspective on the world with the public at large. In his photographs, Garcin poses as an ordinary 'Mr. Everybody,' dressed in an old overcoat. By placing himself, via the character he embodies, in absurd and inextricable situations, he invites us to ponder such philosophical quandaries as time, solitude and the weight of existence.

(1925 – 1972)

Ralph Eugene Meatyard was born in Normal, Illinois on May 15, 1925. He served in the Navy, studied pre-dentistry at Williams College (1943-44) and philosophy at Illinois Wesleyan University (1950). He began his career as an optician in 1949. The optical firm where he worked, Tinder-Krauss-Tinder, also sold photographic equipment and supplies. There Meatyard purchased his first camera in 1950 in order to photograph his newborn son. Once established in his own practice, Eyeglasses of Kentucky, he hung the walls of the reception area with rotating exhibitions of his own pictures and those of other photographers, including Emmet Gowin. Meatyard exhibited selections from Georgetown Street, a collaborative effort with Van Deren Coke, along with other early work at Roy DeCarava's A Photographer's Place in 1957-8, and had his first solo show in 1959 at Tulane University.
Throughout his career as photographer, he continued working as an optometrist at Eyeglasses of Kentucky, and was known to his friends as a devoted family man who somehow eked out time to photograph on weekends. Meatyard's interest in Eastern thinking was sparked at a workshop in Indiana where Minor White recommended a list of books crucial to a photographer's education which included two volumes on Zen. Photographs by Meatyard are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York; George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film...

Alex Webb

Alex Webb became interested in photography during his high school years and attended the Apeiron Workshops in Millerton, New York, in 1972. He majored in history and literature at Harvard University, at the same time studying photography at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts. In 1974 he began working as a professional photojournalist and he joined Magnum Photos as an associate member in 1976.

During the mid-1970s Webb photographed in the American south, documenting small-town life in black and white. He also began working in the Caribbean and Mexico. In 1978 he started to photograph in color, as he has continued to do. He has published seven photography books, including Hot Light/Half-Made Worlds: Photographs from the Tropics, Under A Grudging Sun, Crossings, the limited edition artist book Dislocations and Istanbul: City of a Hundred Names.

Webb received a New York Foundation of the Arts Grant in 1986, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1990, a Hasselblad Foundation Grant in 1998 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007. He won the Leopold Godowsky Color Photography Award in 1988, the Leica Medal of Excellence in 2000 and the David Octavius Hill Award in 2002. His photographs have been the subject of articles in Art in America and Modern Photography. He has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe, in museums including the Walker Art Center, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the International Center of Photography, the High Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Sixty two years ago in Karen State, Burma, the Karen people were forced into a David and Goliath conflict against the powerful authoritarian Burmese military regime who have tried to push the Karen people off the map through a brutal and systematic policy of murder, rape, forced labor and the complete destruction of their villages. Six decades on, and now considered the world’s longest current running conflict, the Karen people continue to be brutalized in an ongoing pursuit to cleanse them from their homeland they call Kawtoolie.

"Working on assignment in Karen State in 2010 I was enamored by the calm resilience of the Karen people, both volunteer soldiers and civilians who all seem to possess a quiet determination backed up by their motto ‘never surrender’. Moved by the stoic and yet serene nature of Karen and horrified with their stories of the human rights violations against them, I decided to return in February 2011, self-funded, to bring the face of the Karen people, and their highly under-reported struggle to survive against the brutal Burmese junta to a greater audience in the hope of affecting some positive change."

Kim Thue was born in September 1980 in Grindsted, a small Danish town situated on the windy moors of Jutland. As a restless teenager he moved to the U.K. and is now based in London. He describes his work as "sequenced accumulations of unsung tragedies, vulnerable integrity and personally profound chance encounters."

Currently, Kim is drawing to a close a long-term book project from Freetown, Sierra Leone entitled "Dead Traffic." About the book he writes: "Despite Sierra Leone being renowned for its brutal civil war, this work doesn’t have a hidden political agenda in mind, a specific humanitarian issue to pinpoint or even a clear story to tell. Instead I hope to have shot something the viewer can tune into emotionally. Something that hits a nerve without being conceived as coercive in nature. A collection of images, suggesting simply an incredible abundance of human vitality and perseverance, flourishing within an overwhelmingly harsh and inclement city."
Publisher Calin Kruse adds, "Shot over the course of two trips lasting 10 months, Kim allowed enough time to fully submerse himself in the livelihoods and emotions of his subjects. His efforts leave us with an extensive, highly engaging and subjective visual account of a corner of the world normally unrevealed to most of us."

Glamour of the Gods: Hollywood Portraits

Glamour of the Gods is a survey of Hollywood portraiture from the industry's golden age, a period lasting from 1920 to 1960. All the photographs were selected from the astonishing archive of the John Kobal Foundation in London. John Kobal was the twentieth century's pre-eminent authority on Hollywood photography, and was systematically sought to understand photography's important role in creating and marketing the great stars central to Hollywood's allure.

Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and Humphrey Bogart are among the famous faces featured in Glamour of the Gods. In many cases the photographs in John Kobal's collection define their era, and most of the reproductions are from the archive's original vintage prints.

Film historian Robert Dance has written about John Kobal's important place in Hollywood history and offers an overview of the portrait photographer's place in the Hollywood studio system. Critic and historian John Russell Taylor's introduction draws from his many years of friendship with Kobal.

Placing photography at the centre of Hollywood Glamour of the Gods explores how actors and actresses had a profound effect on how beauty and celebrity was seen and understood then, and how it continues to live on.

FRIDA KAHLO - AS SUAS FOTOGRAFIAS

Casa da América Latina traz a Lisboa uma selecção de 257 fotografias das 6.500 que compõem o acervo da Casa Azul/Museu Frida Kahlo numa exposição intitulada “Frida Kahlo - As Suas Fotografias”. Esta é a primeira apresentação internacional da exposição que pode ser visitada de 4 de Novembro de 2011 a 29 de Janeiro de 2012, no Pavilhão Preto do Museu da Cidade (Campo Grande).

“Frida Kahlo - As Suas Fotografias”, apresentada pelo Museu Frida Kahlo em 2010, exibe um conjunto significativo de fotografias que serviram à pintora mexicana como recordação, ferramenta de trabalho ou como forma de exorcizar a solidão. Esta mostra, com curadoria de Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, reconhecido fotógrafo e historiador da fotografia no México, ilustra a importância deste meio artístico na vida da pintora.

Esta exposição que mostra uma série de fotografias que pertenciam ao acervo pessoal da artista, na sua maioria desconhecidas, divide-se em seis núcleos: Os Pais: Guillermo e Matilde; A Casa Azul; O Corpo Acidentado; Os Amores de Frida; A Fotografia e a Luta Política. Não se pretende apresentar uma cronologia da vida e obra de Frida Kahlo, mas antes, mostrar pedaços da sua história pessoal e da sua intimidade, de um país e de uma época, permitindo também descobrir novas facetas de uma das personalidades mais complexas e enigmáticas do século XX.

O valor das imagens como testemunho histórico é inegável, mas também o é pela presença de olhares de outros fotógrafos de renome que a fotografaram e se podem encontrar nesta exposição: Man Ray, Martin Munkácsi, Fritz Henle, Adward Weston, Brassai, Tina Modotti, Pierre Verger, Lola y Manuel Álvarez, entre outros.

[…] Sobre a fotografia Frida escreveu: “Sabia que o campo de batalha do sofrimento se reflectia nos meus olhos. Desde então, comecei a encarar directamente a objectiva, sem pestanejar, sem sorrir, decidida a mostrar que seria uma excelente lutadora até ao final.” Este arquivo é produto da tenacidade de Frida que o guardou, trabalhou e dele desfrutou. Estão aqui as fotografias da artista e também muitas que guardou de Diego. O acervo reflecte de maneira clara os interesses que a pintora teve ao longo da sua vida atormentada: a família, o seu fascínio por Diego e outros amores, o corpo acidentado e a ciência médica, os amigos e alguns inimigos, a luta politica e a arte, os índios e o passado pré-hispânico, tudo marcado pela sua grande paixão pelo México e pelos mexicanos.

For the past year Hugo has been photographing the people and landscape of an expansive dump of obsolete technology in Ghana. The area, on the outskirts of a slum known as Agbogbloshie, is referred to by local inhabitants as Sodom and Gomorrah, a vivid acknowledgment of the profound inhumanity of the place. When Hugo asked the inhabitants what they called the pit where the burning takes place, they repeatedly responded: ‘For this place, we have no name’.
Their response is a reminder of the alien circumstances that are imposed on marginal communities of the world by the West’s obsession with consumption and obsolesce. This wasteland, where people and cattle live on mountains of motherboards, monitors and discarded hard drives, is far removed from the benefits accorded by the unrelenting advances of technology.

The UN Environment Program has stated that Western countries produce around 50 million tons of digital waste every year. In Europe, only 25 percent of this type of waste is collected and effectively recycled. Much of the rest is piled in containers and shipped to developing countries, supposedly to reduce the digital divide, to create jobs and help people. In reality, the inhabitants of dumps like Agbogbloshie survive largely by burning the electronic devices to extract copper and other metals out of the plastic used in their manufacture. The electronic waste contaminates rivers and lagoons with consequences that are easily imaginable. In 2008 Green Peace took samples of the burnt soil in Agbogbloshie and found high concentrations of lead, mercury, thallium, hydrogen cyanide and PVC.

Notions of time and progress are collapsed in these photographs. There are elements in the images that fast-forward us to an apocalyptic end of the world as we know it, yet the alchemy on this site and the strolling cows recall a pastoral existence that rewinds our minds to a medieval setting. The cycles of history and the lifespan of our technology are both clearly apparent in this cemetery of artifacts from the industrialised world. We are also reminded of the fragility of the information and stories that were stored in the computers which are now just black smoke and melted plastic.

Shelby Lee Adams

The influence of classic photographers and Southern writers and others who have documented the Appalachian region is clear in the work of Shelby Lee Adams. An image such as The Home Funeral, however, crystallizes the familiar shacks and extended families into something unexpected. Using multiple strobes and an 8×10 view camera, Adams achieves both a special quality of light and a depth of field that keeps everything, from the wall-calendar in the foreground to the stark bulb on the ceiling to the ferns above the coffin, in focus. Adams’s composition – marked by sharp division of space and clarity of detail – places the viewer in the role of omniscient visitor to this otherwise private moment. Adams himself, having grown up in Kentucky and familiar with the mountain culture, is both an insider and an outside observer – a dichotomy the documentary photographer must frequently confront. He takes on this role once again in Leddie and Children, conveying a juxtaposition of both the claustrophobic familial closeness and the wide open space of the landscape itself.

Shelby Lee Adams was born in 1950 in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. He now lives there as well as in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts. Appalachia is not only Adams’s birthplace, but the subject of his photographs as well.

Rickard's work on this project has a clever framework. He has been exploring the world through Google street views. Google has been mapping the world from the vantage point of the center of its streets. The camera, tethered to a GPS system, is mounted on a car and takes wide angle images every twenty feet or so from a fixed height of about 7 feet. The user of Google's street views can not only pan 360 degrees but pan up and down and zoom in on a part of the image. The final images are run through facial recognition software which attempts to blur the faces of people unintentionally recorded when the camera car passed by.

Surveillance cameras in banks or on city streets have the potential to record an image which is as worthy of high praise as any made by Frank or Evans. So is the case of the billions of snapshots made around the world every day from amateurs. Rickard has been sifting through Google's images to - like any photographer working in the streets - find interesting things to stare at and photograph them off of his computer monitor. In terms of street photography, several factors have been taken away; one is timing as the photographs are triggered by the GPS system when the car passes over a specific coordinate and the second is vantage point, so the usual "finding out where to stand" element is off the table as well.

(...) I have always been drawn to Sharon Olds' poetry. The themes are often domestic and familiar—children, husband, lover, sex, aging, birth, death, home—but they are described in an unsentimental and often raw way. Her work is frank, unapologetic and human. It looks with clear-eyed honesty at the place from which we all come—our homes, our families, our bodies. This is both inspiring and a great relief to me.

I’d have to say that these are the same themes that motivate my work, and I certainly try to be direct and honest in the way I photograph. My work is essentially familiar and seems to originate from the immediate sensual world (the world of the home and interpersonal experiences), rather than from an intellectual or political one. I usually begin with issues that have to do with the body—the fact that our bodies are the first point of connection between ourselves and the world around us---and then cycle out from there. I always photograph subjects I want to understand better—for example my mother’s illness. I am very compulsive once I find a subject and my process can be seen as an obsession to see more clearly the thing that I don't yet understand.

Once I decide on a subject, I go out and find the people or events that help me study it more closely (unless it is already in my home, in which case I don’t have far to go). This can be something as specific as “hunting”, (which I have photographed for years—bear, moose, deer and bowhead whale hunts to name a few), or as abstract as “sexuality in older age”. My methods will vary in terms of how I make the pictures, but the origin is always personal fascination. (...)
