Claire Martin

Claire began her career by pursuing a degree in Social Work, however, she changed her focus to Photography when she realised that change can also be effected through this medium. Her ongoing documentation of marginalized communities within prosperous nations has recently won her the Magnum Foundation 2010 Inge Morath award for Female Photographers under 30 years of age. Since beginning her career pursuing personal projects in 2007 Claire has quickly received praise for her unique style gaining support from Getty Images as an Emerging Talent in Reportage as well as representing Australia’s Emerging Female Photojournalist for Foto Freo 2010.


Her work in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side, has brought to light terrible injustices and the government’s failure to address the social problems that plague this community. This series has been recognised by the IPA, winning her a nomination for “Deeper Perspective Photographer 2008”. A single image from the series also won the “Up and Coming Portrait Photographer 2009” at the Sony World Photography Awards. Her most recent project “Slab City” documents the lives of a community of Squatters in the California desert. With these images Claire was recognised by Nan Goldin and Vice Magazine as representing “woman and poverty” and exhibited at the Association of Photographers Gallery, London.
