Art historian Dr. Ralf-P. Seippel has curated this historic photographic overview of South African culture and lifestyle from the 1950’s to the present. Comprising mostly of black and white photography, this extensive touring exhibition gives insight into South Africa’s social, political and cultural aspects, as well as the economic situation and the struggle for survival in the mega-cities. It shows how South Africa has evolved into the modern nation we know today.

Images by photographers including Bonile Bam, Jodi Bieber, Pierre Crocquet, David Goldblatt, Bob Gosani, George Hallett, Alf Kumalo, Ranjith Kally, Peter Magubane, Gideon Mendel, Santu Mofokeng, G.R. Naidoo, Cedric Nunn, Mikhael Subotzky, Andrew Tshabangu, Paul Weinberg, Gille de Vlieg and Sam Nzima, as well as those from DRUM Magazine whose names are today unknown, provide us with individual insights into life in South Africa over the past 60 years.
Photographs from the 50s and 60s published in DRUM tell the story of life in the period of Apartheid and reveal the naked truth of segregation, as well as documenting sports events, football stars and a night life full of jazz and dancing. Images from the 70s, such as Sam Nzima’s iconic photograph of wounded Hector Pieterson, shot down by the police in Soweto, 16 June 1976, document the growing struggle and resistance of the anti-apartheid movements. Further photographs from the 80s and 90s highlight brutal murders, demonstrations, the violence and brutality of imprisonment and the fight for freedom. Finally, photographers working in the 21st Century show a South Africa of recovery and immense development, democracy and freedom, alongside an understanding of the work still to be done and the inequalities that remain. In this new South Africa everyone can vote, there is freedom of speech and gender equality allows women to show their strengths.

Daniel Blaufuks nasceu em Lisboa em 1963.
A sua formação dividiu-se entre a AR.CO, Lisboa, o Royal College of Arts, Londres, e a Watermill Foundation, Nova Iorque.

O seu trabalho tem-se centrado na relação entre fotografia e literatura, recordação pessoal e a memória colectiva. Utilizando principalmente fotografia e vídeo, é autor de livros, instalações, filmes e diários facsimilados, como London Diaries (1994) e Uma Viagem a São Petersburgo (1998). Depois de Sob Céus Estranhos (2002), realizou Um Pouco Mais Pequeno do Que o Indiana (2006), um ensaio sobre paisagem e memória colectiva em Portugal.

O seu trabalho encontra-se representado em várias colecções entre as quais: Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisboa), Colecção Berardo (Lisboa), Centro Galego de Arte Contemporânea (Santiago de Compostela), Palazzo delle Papesse (Siena), Sagamore Collection (Miami), The Progressive Collection (Ohio). Em 2007, foi o vencedor do Prémio BES Photo 2006, o mais importante prémio nacional de fotografia e no ano de 2007, o livro Sob Céus Estranhos foi considerado o melhor livro de fotografia internacional do PhotoEspanha.

Glamour of the Gods: Hollywood Portraits


Glamour of the Gods is a survey of Hollywood portraiture from the industry's golden age, a period lasting from 1920 to 1960. All the photographs were selected from the astonishing archive of the John Kobal Foundation in London. John Kobal was the twentieth century's pre-eminent authority on Hollywood photography, and was systematically sought to understand photography's important role in creating and marketing the great stars central to Hollywood's allure.


Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and Humphrey Bogart are among the famous faces featured in Glamour of the Gods. In many cases the photographs in John Kobal's collection define their era, and most of the reproductions are from the archive's original vintage prints.

Film historian Robert Dance has written about John Kobal's important place in Hollywood history and offers an overview of the portrait photographer's place in the Hollywood studio system. Critic and historian John Russell Taylor's introduction draws from his many years of friendship with Kobal.


Placing photography at the centre of Hollywood Glamour of the Gods explores how actors and actresses had a profound effect on how beauty and celebrity was seen and understood then, and how it continues to live on.

FRIDA KAHLO - AS SUAS FOTOGRAFIAS

Casa da América Latina traz a Lisboa uma selecção de 257 fotografias das 6.500 que compõem o acervo da Casa Azul/Museu Frida Kahlo numa exposição intitulada “Frida Kahlo - As Suas Fotografias”. Esta é a primeira apresentação internacional da exposição que pode ser visitada de 4 de Novembro de 2011 a 29 de Janeiro de 2012, no Pavilhão Preto do Museu da Cidade (Campo Grande).

“Frida Kahlo - As Suas Fotografias”, apresentada pelo Museu Frida Kahlo em 2010, exibe um conjunto significativo de fotografias que serviram à pintora mexicana como recordação, ferramenta de trabalho ou como forma de exorcizar a solidão. Esta mostra, com curadoria de Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, reconhecido fotógrafo e historiador da fotografia no México, ilustra a importância deste meio artístico na vida da pintora.

Esta exposição que mostra uma série de fotografias que pertenciam ao acervo pessoal da artista, na sua maioria desconhecidas, divide-se em seis núcleos: Os Pais: Guillermo e Matilde; A Casa Azul; O Corpo Acidentado; Os Amores de Frida; A Fotografia e a Luta Política. Não se pretende apresentar uma cronologia da vida e obra de Frida Kahlo, mas antes, mostrar pedaços da sua história pessoal e da sua intimidade, de um país e de uma época, permitindo também descobrir novas facetas de uma das personalidades mais complexas e enigmáticas do século XX.


O valor das imagens como testemunho histórico é inegável, mas também o é pela presença de olhares de outros fotógrafos de renome que a fotografaram e se podem encontrar nesta exposição: Man Ray, Martin Munkácsi, Fritz Henle, Adward Weston, Brassai, Tina Modotti, Pierre Verger, Lola y Manuel Álvarez, entre outros.

[…] Sobre a fotografia Frida escreveu: “Sabia que o campo de batalha do sofrimento se reflectia nos meus olhos. Desde então, comecei a encarar directamente a objectiva, sem pestanejar, sem sorrir, decidida a mostrar que seria uma excelente lutadora até ao final.” Este arquivo é produto da tenacidade de Frida que o guardou, trabalhou e dele desfrutou. Estão aqui as fotografias da artista e também muitas que guardou de Diego. O acervo reflecte de maneira clara os interesses que a pintora teve ao longo da sua vida atormentada: a família, o seu fascínio por Diego e outros amores, o corpo acidentado e a ciência médica, os amigos e alguns inimigos, a luta politica e a arte, os índios e o passado pré-hispânico, tudo marcado pela sua grande paixão pelo México e pelos mexicanos.

Robert Capa - The Definitive Collection


This book represents the most definitive selection of Robert Capa's work ever published, a collection of 937 photographs selected by Capa's brother, Cornell Capa (himself a noted Life photographer), and his biographer, Richard Whelan, who meticulously re-examined all of Robert Capa's contact sheets to compile this master set of images.
This book opens with a biographical introduction illustrated with rare photographs of Capa, and closes with a chronology of his life.

Contemporary photo culture is marked by a continuous flow of images online, and our aim is to take a moment to recognize some of the noteworthy photographs published in this ever-expanding archive over the past four years. In this context, projected several times larger than life, these portraits look back at us and embody a louder voice in the discourse of the gaze.

Willy Ronis 
une poétique de l'engagement


Willy Ronis was born in Paris in 1910. He became a full-time photographer in 1945.
He joined Doisneau, Brassaï and others at the Rapho Agency. He was the first French photographer to work for LIFE Magazine, and Edward Steichen exhibited him at the Museum of Modern Art in 1953 in a show called Four French Photographers. He was also part of the Family of Man exhibit. The Afterimage Gallery gave him what was perhaps his first American art gallery show in 1985

Legio Patria Nostra - Être ser Torero - American Fireman - Men of the sea

Giorgia Fiorio, Italian singer, actress, photojournalist and photographer was born on July 23, 1967 in Turin, Italy.

She attended the International Center of Photography in New York and produced her first in-depth photo essay on boxers. Since then she has worked primarily on long-term self-directed projects, such as "Men" which resulted in five monographs - Legio Patria Nostra (French Foreign Legion), Etre/Ser Torero (bullfighters), Boxin' USA, American Firemen, and Men of the Sea - as well as Des Hommes (Marval 2003). Her present work is on the theme of spirituality. She joined Contact Press Images in 1994, and in 1997 was named Documentary Photographer of the Year by American Photography magazine.
She is represented exclusively by art dealer Cyrille de Gunzburg for the worldwide sale of her original prints. She is based in Paris.





 
Giorgia's project "Men" began in 1990, a project exploring closed male communities: Ukrainian miners, New York boxers, the Foreign Legion, Spanish bullfighters, American fire fighters and Men of the Sea, "Men who are rooted in archaic worlds at home with centuries-old experiences, rituals and gestures".
This project has been captured in six books, published in Paris. In 2002, Stern devoted their Spezial issue to her, and her work has been published in the New York Times Magazine, Aperture, the Independent Magazine, etc.

Ansel Adams photos found at garage sale worth $200 million


Los Angeles, California -- Rick Norsigian's hobby of picking through piles of unwanted items at garage sales in search of antiques has paid off for the Fresno, California, painter.


Two small boxes he bought 10 years ago for $45 -- negotiated down from $70 -- are now estimated to be worth at least $200 million, according to a Beverly Hills art appraiser.

Those boxes contained 65 glass negatives created by famed nature photographer Ansel Adams in the early period of his career. Experts believed the negatives were destroyed in a 1937 darkroom fire that destroyed 5,000 plates.

"It truly is a missing link of Ansel Adams and history and his career," said David W. Streets, the appraiser and art dealer who is hosting an unveiling of the photographs at his Beverly Hills, California, gallery Tuesday.

The photographs apparently were taken between 1919 and the early 1930s, well before Adams -- who is known as the father of American photography -- became nationally recognized in the 1940s, Streets said.

"This is going to show the world the evolution of his eye, of his talent, of his skill, his gift, but also his legacy," Streets said. "And it's a portion that we thought had been destroyed in the studio fire."

How these 6.5 x 8.5 inch glass plate negatives of famous Yosemite landscapes and San Francisco landmarks -- some of them with fire damage -- made their way from Adams collection 70 years ago to a Southern California garage sale in 2000 can only be guessed.

The person who sold them to Norsigian at the garage sale told him he bought them in the 1940s at a warehouse salvage in Los Angeles.

Photography expert Patrick Alt, who helped confirm the authenticity of the negatives, suspects Adams carried them to use in a photography class he was teaching in Pasadena, California, in the early 1940s.

"It is my belief that he brought these negatives with him for teaching purposes and to show students how to not let their negatives be engulfed in a fire," Alt said. "I think this clearly explains the range of work in these negatives, from very early pictorialist boat pictures, to images not as successful, to images of the highest level of his work during this time period."

Alt said it is impossible to know why Adams would store them in Pasadena and never reclaim them.

The plates were individually wrapped in newspaper inside deteriorating manila envelopes. Notations on each envelope appeared to have been made by Virginia Adams, the photographer's wife, according to handwriting experts Michael Nattenberg and Marcel Matley. They compared them to samples provided by the Adams' grandson.

While most of the negatives appear never to have been printed, several are nearly identical to well-known Adams prints, the experts said.

Meteorologist George Wright studied clouds and snow cover in a Norsigian negative to conclude that it was taken at about the same time as a known Adams photo of a Yosemite tree.

In addition to Yosemite -- the California wilderness that Adams helped conserve -- the negatives depict California's Carmel Mission, views of a rocky point in Carmel, San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, a sailing yacht at sea and an image of sand dunes.

"The fact that these locations were well-known to Adams, and visited by him, further supports the proposition that all of the images in the collection were most probably created by Adams," said art expert Robert Moeller.

Moeller said that after six months of study, he concluded "with a high degree of probability, that the images under consideration were produced by Ansel Adams.

Silver tarnishing on the negatives also helped date the plates to around the 1920s, Alt said.

"I have sent people to prison for the rest of their lives for far less evidence than I have seen in this case," said evidence and burden of proof expert Manny Medrano, who was hired by Norsigian to help authenticate them. "In my view, those photographs were done by Ansel Adams."

Norsigian, who has spent the last decade trying to prove the worth of his discovery, is now ready to cash in -- by selling original prints of the photographs to museums and collectors.

"I have estimated that his $45 investment easily could be worth up to $200 million," Streets said.

This book is intended to explore at an international level the works of some of the emerging artists who use the photographic medium without adopting the generic schemata of traditional photography.


Since the 1960s, the author, Mario Cresci, has taken an approach to photography that aims to free the medium from the specificity of its own representational language. In this book, the sum total of his artistic experience, together with a busy teaching activity, has allowed him to articulate a desire to establish a link between the various ways of investigating the visual world that are modifying the disciplinary foundations of photography.

Although not of fundamental importance in relation to the artistic transformation of photography, it is certain that the advent of the new technologies, both with regard to the cameras themselves and the printing of digital images, has contributed to new reflections that, at a theoretical level,had already been undertaken in the 1970s,when the Conceptual Art movement was at its height. In short, one could say that we are now experiencing an epoch-making transition from the analogue process to the digital one, or, to put it more simply, we have progressed from the darkroom to the lightroom.

David Douglas Duncan - Photo Nomad

Photo Nomada unique autobiography in images from seven decades of Duncan's photographic career.

The legendary photographs of David Douglas Duncan explore the broad range of human nature, from the most quiet notes of life to the crashing crescendos of war.
Duncan began taking pictures for newspapers in the mid-1930s, then joined the Marines, where he produced some of the most moving images of World War II.

With Life magazine, he documented the end of British rule in India and covered conflicts in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Korea with clarity and compassion. Returning to the battlefield with the escalation of war in Vietnam, he produced two more books that became icons of the American soldiers' experience. Since then, he has produced books on such diverse subjects as Picasso's making of a painting to the sunflowers of France, with forays into the world of tragic personal loss. Still exuberant in his eighth decade. Duncan's keen eye and heart continue to illuminate the human experience.

Irving Penn - Small Trades


Irving Penn (1917 - 2009)

Photographer  (b. 1917) is renowned for his innovative contributions to portrait, still life, and fashion photography, and a career that has spanned more than six decades at Vogue magazine. In 1950, Vogue assigned Penn to photograph workers in Paris, and thus his monumental work The Small Trades began. Created in 1950 and 1951 in Paris, London, and New York, The Small Trades consists of portraits of skilled trades people dressed in their work clothes and carrying the tools of their respective trades. Capturing the humble coal heaver and the crisply dressed waiter with equal directness, Penn's arresting portraits also underscore fascinating cultural differences.



The Small Trades was Penn's most extensive body of work, and he returned to it over many decades, producing ever more exacting prints. Two hundred and six unique images from the series are flawlessly reproduced in this book. In addition, the introductory essay describes the history and context of The Small Trades series and its importance to Penn's career and the history of photography. An interview with Edmonde Charles-Roux, the chief editor for French Vogue from 1952 to 1966, who assisted him on the assignment in Paris, provides fascinating insights of the Paris sittings.

Stanley Kubrick - The Photographer.






Stanley Kubrick

The most visual Directors, like Kurosawa, Lean and Fellini, have some sort of a visual arts background. Stanley Kubrick is no exception. He started out as a Professional Photographer.

Stanley got his first camera (a Graflex) at age 13 and was the class photographer at Taft High School.

He was just 16 when he submitted a "staged photograph" (of a News Vendor the day after President Roosevelt died) to Look Magazine and was first published. This led to a 5 year career in the magazine (1945-1950). At 17 years old, he was the youngest photographer on staff.

I am amazed at the depth and technical mastery of these photographs, specially since they were taken when Stanley was just between 17 to 22 years of age.

O fotógrafo francês Willy Ronis, conhecido por retratar o cotidiano pós-guerra nas cidades de Paris e de Provença, morreu aos 99 anos neste sábado, 12.
Ronis, juntamente com Robert Doisneau e Henri Cartier-Bresson, estava entre os grandes fotógrafos franceses que surgiram após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, embora tenha iniciado a carreira na década de 1930. Grande parte de sua obra é composta por retratos de amantes e por cenas das ruas de Paris, refletindo o estilo da chamada escola humanista de fotografia.

Era uno de los más grandes fotógrafos de su tiempo, Willy Ronis llegó a la fotografía profesional casi por accidente, en 1936, pues al inicio, este contemporáneo de los grandes fotógrafos Robert Doisneau y Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Le photographe français Willy Ronis, sommité de l'école humaniste, est décédé dans la nuit de vendredi à samedi à Paris. Il était âgé de 99 ans. Pendant des décennies, Willy Ronis a saisi la vie quotidienne des Parisiens sur des clichés pris sur le vif. Il a été révélé par ses reportages sur les mouvements sociaux. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a fait partie de l'école humaniste française au côté de Robert Doisneau et d'Edouard Boubat.

Willy Ronis, the last of the great French photographers best-known for shots of the quirky corners of Paris, died Saturday in Paris after being on dialysis for some time. Lovers, nudes and scenes from Paris streets were the mainstay of Ronis' photographs, which reflect the so-called humanist school of photography in an award-winning career that began in the 1930s and reaped honors for him in France and abroad.
