Afghan refugee camp on the outskirts of Islamabad, capital of Pakistan. During the Soviet invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, from 1979 to 1989, more than 3 million Afghan refugees fled to Pakistan, according to government statistics. Thousands of them, some born here, still live in these camps without electricity, running water or other basic services.
